The indicativo indefinido (preterite) describes actions or states that began or were completed at a specific time in the past.

The indicativo indefinido is used to express completed actions or states:

• Mi hermana compró el libro ayer.
• Mi sister bought the book yesterday.
• Viví en los estados unidos por dos años.
• I lived in the United States for 2 years.

It is also used to describe the beginning or the end of an action in the past:

• Los niños empezaron arreglar la habitación a las seis.
• The children began tidy up the room at six.

And we use it to describe a series of actions in the past:

• Juan se duchó, se afeitó y se vistió.
• Juan took a shower, shaved, and got dressed.

The following table does not include all existing irregular verbs in the indicativo indefinido tense. It provides verbs that are most important and often used in the Spanish language.

Stem-changing -ir verbs have a stem change in their third-person form. Stem-changing -ar and -er verbs do not have a stem change unless they are in the group of u-stem, i-stem, or j-stem verbs:
